PlayStation Hit by Layoffs: 900 Jobs Cut Globally
PlayStation maker Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced a workforce reduction of around 900 employees, representing 8% of its global staff. This news follows a trend of industry layoffs in 2024, marking one of the largest cuts so far.
Difficult Choices for “Future-Ready” PlayStation
In a blog post titled “Difficult News About Our Workforce,” CEO Jim Ryan acknowledged the layoffs as a “very tough decision.” Affected employees will include those across various studios and departments. Notably, the London Studio will close entirely, with the VR development team at Firesprite also facing cuts.
The announcement provided clearer details for US employees, who were notified on the same day. For employees in Japan, a “next career support program” was offered. Details regarding impacts in other regions remain unclear, with plans for “conversations” with potentially affected staff.
Saying Goodbye to Valued Employees
Ryan expressed sincere gratitude to departing employees and acknowledged the emotional toll on those remaining. He emphasized that “resilience, sensitivity, and adaptiveness” will be crucial moving forward.
Reasons Behind the Restructuring
Citing a “changing economic landscape” and the need to adapt product development, distribution, and launch strategies for the future, Ryan labeled the decision “inevitable” for ensuring SIE’s continued success.
